It is fundamental for the design, specification and construction of retaining structures to understand what is going on below the ground and what is being supported. This is where the geotechnical engineer comes in.

No two retaining structures are the same – each is specifically designed and constructed to meet different needs, be it a simple metre‐high retaining wall or a 30 m deep anchored excavation for a multiple level basement.

We can provide geotechnical services for gravity retaining walls, diaphragm walls for deep excavations, sheet piling, soldier piles or contiguous piles for basements and other temporary or permanent excavations, wet wells (including fully saturated conditions) created by permeation or jet grouting, deep soil mixing (DSM) columns and more.

  • Sub‐surface investigation including in‐situ testing and laboratory testing
  • Retaining structure design taking into account the constraints of the project (available space, cost, time)
  • Specification, drawings and design reports
  • Review of proposals from contractors
  • Construction support
  • Quality Assurance
  • Verification reporting

From geotechnical investigation and concept design through to design, specification, documentation and tender, we can provide a full package that will get the project through to contract award.

We consider that construction support and quality assurance of the retaining structure (including anchoring) and the associated proof testing is an essential part of the proper design of a retaining structure. We have the on‐site support you need to review your contractor’s activities, ensure that the specification is being followed and to undertake quality assurance testing for verification reporting.

At the end of the project, we can write up a close‐out verification report for inclusion in the project documentation. In this way, we can make sure that your retaining structure is built the right way.
